THE QUESTION IT HELPS YOU ASK

Which side is maintaining
its ground?

01 / THE CONCEPT

Price moved.
Is it holding ground?

Buyer / Seller Hold evaluates price relative to a rolling reference close. The recent pattern of closes, the net movement and the traded order flow contribute to a reading of acceptance.

Read what price keeps.A view across recent bars, beyond one strong candle.
ILLUSTRATED CONTEXT
Earlier reference closeGround above the reference
Illustrative Buyer Hold context with price maintaining ground above an earlier closeAn earlier bar’s close supplies the reference. Most subsequent illustrated closes remain above it, with one return to the other side. The current bar has a conceptual Buyer Hold marker. No future price bars are shown. Reference close ?
Reference barRecent windowCurrent barOutcome open
Close on the holding sideReturn to the other side

Most illustrated closes stay above the earlier close. A return to the other side can weaken the reading without automatically ruling it out.

A QUALIFYING EVENT CAN SHOW

Buyer Hold

Evidence that price is maintaining ground above the reference, assessed alongside the movement and order flow.

Consistency adds context.

How the recent closes behave matters, as well as how far the current close has moved from the reference.

The next move remains open. Maintained ground can still give way.

THE BROADER READING · SEVERAL PIECES OF EVIDENCE

Ground retained

The pattern of closes

Consistency on the new side, returns and where bars close in their ranges.

Traded-volume movement

Movement of traded volume and the accompanying flow bias.

Efficiency and rejection

Price efficiency supports the read; competing rejection evidence can reduce it.

Concept illustration. The line, shading and bar count explain the idea; they are not automatically drawn features or a fixed lookback setting. Colors and marker style are illustrative. Switching context changes the example only; it does not calculate an indicator score or determine whether a real marker must appear.

A hold is an assessment across a window.

The reference rolls forward as the chart develops. The marker identifies a qualifying event in that reading, with strength and spacing filters. It does not promise the first bar of a move, or print on every bar that remains on the same side.

03 / CHOOSE THE RIGHT READ

How is control
being assessed?

Acceptance across recent closes and the location of a bar’s heaviest volume answer different questions.

01

Buyer / Seller Hold

THIS TOOL

Is price maintaining ground relative to an earlier close?

Combines the recent pattern of closes, net movement and supporting order flow.

Has the Point of Control shifted at a swing?

Examines a specific two-bar handoff in POC location, with the surrounding swing and candle direction.

Is the bar’s heaviest traded price in its wick?

Focuses on the POC’s position within the bar, with an optional tag for consecutive POCs at the same price.

04 / THE RIGHT SETUP

Before you add it.

Buyer / Seller Hold runs inside ATAS and works independently. You do not need another Footprint Lab indicator to use it.

WHERE IT FITS

Examine how ground is maintained.

  • Read acceptance across a recent window of bars.
  • Compare retained movement with the pattern of closes.
  • Add context to a continuation thesis within the wider structure.
KEEP IN MIND

Maintained ground can give way, and price can range or reverse. A Hold reading does not guarantee continuation or prove that a specific participant is defending a level.

BUILD THE CONTEXT

Understand acceptance in the wider auction.

is being held.

Ask Footprint Lab

What is the reference for a Buyer Hold or Seller Hold?
An earlier closing price from the engine’s recent lookback. A Buyer Hold concerns ground maintained above that reference; a Seller Hold concerns ground maintained below it. The reference rolls forward as the chart develops. It is not a support or resistance line selected by the user.
Must every close remain on the holding side?
No. The engine combines the pattern of closes with net movement, closing locations and supporting price/flow evidence. Returns to the other side can weaken the reading. The concept switches illustrate that effect without calculating the indicator’s score or defining a mandatory marker outcome.
How is Hold different from Impulse?
Impulse examines directional pressure supported by price progress. Buyer / Seller Hold evaluates how price maintains ground across a recent window relative to an earlier close. A Hold event does not prove that the move has just started or that continuation must follow.
Is this a POC signal or a defended liquidity level?
It is an acceptance reading around a reference close, not a test of where the Point of Control sits. It also does not identify a named buyer or seller, observe resting orders, or prove that a particular level is being defended.
Does it draw a reference line or zone?
The reviewed indicator draws markers and hover details. The line and shading in the concept diagram explain the idea; they are not automatic line or zone features. No hand-drawn level is required, and the internal lookback is set by the engine preset.
Will it mark every bar that stays on the same side?
No. Markers identify qualifying events in the reading, with Signal Strength and spacing filters. They are not a continuous label on every bar that stays above or below the reference. A score is not a win probability.
Can a marker change, and how do alerts work?
Forming-bar previews are enabled by default and can change or disappear before the close. Turn them off for closed-bar-only markers. Alerts start switched off; once enabled, bar-close timing is the default, with an earlier option for forming-bar previews. Settings or chart-history changes can recalculate historical readings.
Which instruments have automatic presets?
Auto maps NQ/MNQ to the NQ preset, ES/MES to ES, and CL/MCL/QM to CL. QM shares the CL calibration. Other instruments use Custom calibration and may need volume-scale adjustment. Footprint/volume-at-price data at one tick per price level is required. Buyer / Seller Hold works independently.
How do I activate Buyer / Seller Hold after purchase?
Supply your ATAS account email at checkout. Access is granted to that account, and the included PDF guide walks through setup. Follow the ATAS activation instructions in the documentation.
